Holiness and Zeal
Holiness and Purity
We think that grace and holiness are at odds with each other — when, in fact, God's grace is what empowers us to be holy. We want to avoid being perceived as religious like the Pharisees — even at the cost of obeying God.
The Word commands us “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16, Leviticus 20:26
Hebrews 12:14
Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

"Hyper-Grace" / Cheap Grace

"Compromise"
"Comfort"
"Tolerance" |
In an effort to avoid being perceived as religious like the Pharisees, and to appear loving and gracious, we have vilified words like holiness, performance, striving, and judging, while making "tolerance" the new highest virtue. As a result, without a strong conviction for holiness, many have become lukewarm.
It's a twisted form of 'holiness' and 'zeal' that leads to self-righteousness.
2 Timothy 3:5
A proper understanding of holiness and zeal will lead to humility, love, joy, and peace. |
It's a cheapening of God's Grace that leads to compromise.
2 Timothy 3:4
A proper understanding of God's grace will lead you to holiness without compromise, intolerance toward sin, and forgiveness towards others. |
God isn't one-half Holiness and one-half Grace. It's not just a spectrum. He's completely Holy, and He's full of Grace. John 1:14
![](images/handle.png)
It's narrow-minded to try to resolve a perceived tension by having a one-sided understanding of God instead of a holistic appreciation of the true nature of the character of God as described plainly in the Bible. It's also diminishing to say He's some sort of centrist. God is not lukewarm. |
![](images/knobs.png)
Instead, we need to understand and appreciate both God's Holiness and Grace thoroughly. We need to turn up both knobs to the max.
We shouldn't shrink from declaring the whole counsel of God! Acts 20:27 |
Allen Hood, the associate director of the International House of Prayer of Kansas City, described this very clearly in his message on June 29, 2014 entitled An Urgent Call to Prayer (particularly 0:52:45-0:55:00).
A very respected Christian Author, Dr. Michael L. Brown, is a strong opponent against Hyper-Grace teachings.
While we are warned against being religious hypocrites, we are admonished many times to be holy.
Matthew 5:19-20, 1 Peter 1:16, 1 John 2:1 etc.
Romans 6:1-2
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
Ironically, if we worry about how people see us, we fall into the same trap as the Pharisees.
Matthew 23:25-26
Let us fear God, and pursue authentic holiness, rather than be concerned with how men perceive us.
People, get ready! Jesus is Coming!
Jesus wants to present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish! Ephesians 5:25-32
He wants us to be ready when He returns, as He explains in The Parable of the Ten Virgins. Matthew 25:1-12
2 Peter 3:10-13
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Be "All-In"
![](images/cards.jpg)
Imagine being in a poker game, and you have the royal flush.
No hand could beat you. To not go all-in would mean that you don't really want to win.
In Christ, we have the royal flush! In life, we should go all-in!
Romans 8:31
The Ultimate Price
While He does give to us freely (Matthew 10:8), it didn't come without a price:
God sent His very best — His only son — to pay the ultimate price — death on a cross — forgiving the debt of our sins, and setting us free from death, into everlasting life!
Being made holy by God is an exciting adventure!
It's not some works-centered ball and chain.
It's not trying to earn your salvation.
It's a beautiful response to a beautiful God!
Our prize is Jesus, and we are the joy that He endured the cross for. Hebrews 12:1-2, Ephesians 5:25-32
Jesus gave all of Himself for us, and He expects us to surrender all of ourselves to Him.
One of the greatest sins of our day is an attitude of entitlement. This generation of Americans is notorious for having this attitude. If we aren't vigilant, we'll enter into this presumptuous inclination, forgetting what should be obvious to us from the Word (that Salvation is a free gift Ephesians 2:8) and feeling like we deserve God's mercy and grace. Instead of having an immature posture of entitlement, we ought to respond with a wholehearted lifestyle of authentic repentance, thanksgiving, and worship. Matthew 3:8, Luke 3:8
Do not trivialize His sacrifice!
Repent!
1 Corinthians 2:16b
We have the mind of Christ.
Grace is the power to live holy — free from sin!
He empowers us with the grace to obey.
Biblically, love and obedience are inseparable. 1 John 5:2
John 14:15
If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
1 Samuel 15:22b
...Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice...
Metanoia - μετάνοια - Strong's G3341 - a change of mind
Biblically, repentance means to do a 180° turn from sin, and follow Christ. It's not enough to merely change our thinking. We must agree with the mind of Christ! Jesus warned us that in the last days, the love of many would grow cold, and that there would be a great falling away. Matthew 24:12
Don't take this lightly. This warning is for all of us. We all need to take a "moral inventory" to prove that we stand with Christ.
2 Corinthians 13:5
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? — unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
David said "search me" in Psalm 139. God want's us to, like David, have a heart after God's own heart. (Acts 13:22) A legalistic take on repentance will only lead us to a list of "do's" and "don'ts" that we can not live up to, but the Spirit of Repentance is to fall in love with God so much that all you want to do is abide with Him — "to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord." Psalm 23:6, Psalm 27:4
James 4:8-10
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
When James describes what repentance for a double-minded Christian looks like, he's being literal. A large majority of modern Christian expression denies this depth of Biblical repentance with their nonchalant posture towards sin while maintaining a vigilant commitment to a "Hyper-Grace" ideology.
The level of humility that this repentant posture requires is an invitation to suffering with Christ, which will help to form His character in us.
"godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation" (2 Corinthians 7:9-11)
The Spirit of This Age
People to avoid, and/or sins to repent of: (2 Timothy 3:1-7, Romans 1:28-31, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
- unholy, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power
- lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God
- lovers of self, proud, arrogant
- lovers of money, idolaters, envious, covetous, ungrateful
- without self-control, drunkards, adulterers, sexually immoral
- always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth
- gossips, slanderers, swindlers
- disobedient to their parents
- etc.
Romans 1:32
Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
A discerning believer will know that today's definition of tolerance is essentially lawlessness.
It's been said that "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Recently, the Church has been bullied into being silent about our convictions, thus giving approval to sin — even to the point of whole denominations becoming apostate (PCUSA etc).
Galatians 6:1
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

Jesus Raises the Bar
God's grace didn't lower the bar for sin — in fact, Jesus raised the bar.
Matthew 5:27-48
- Anger
- Lust (this includes porn)
- Divorce
- Oaths
- Retaliation
- Loving your Enemies
- "You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
Unforgiveness is dangerous! Matthew 6:12, 18:21-35
Holiness is impossible. It's literally impossible to be saved without God's supernatural grace.
"With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27, Luke 18:27
"You shall be holy, for I am holy." 1 Peter 1:16
Passion and Zeal
One of the great attributes of God is His Zeal! We're supposed to reflect Jesus in every way!
Jesus said that the love of many would grow cold in the last days (Matthew 24:12). There's a culture of indifference that has crept into the church.
We need to burn away all that hinders love with the fire of God's zeal!
We need to love what God loves and hate what He hates — with a passion!
Romans 12:9-12
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Being zealous is often looked down upon, but God want's us to be zealous for Him. Galatians 2:20
Colossians 3:23
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
The Spirit of Elijah
Malachi 4:5-6, Luke 1:17
John the Baptist was radical! He wore clothes of "camel's hair," and lived on "locusts and wild honey." He partially fulfilled Malachi's prophecy. Preceding the second coming of Jesus, we can expect the complete fulfillment.
Our generation needs to be like Elijah, and John the Baptist:
- Turning the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers
- Being completely sold-out, perhaps even to the point of looking crazy if that's what it takes
- Living in a high level of consecration
- Living in a grace for fasting and prayer
- Having an unprecedented measure of God's power with prophetic revelation
- Calling people to righteousness by calling them to repentance
- Preparing the Bride
- Proclaiming the coming of Jesus (a voice of one "crying aloud in the wilderness") Isaiah 40:3-5
Holiness Above Comfort
Just as Israel was called to be set apart from the surrounding peoples (Leviticus 20:26), believers are called to be set apart. Romans 12:2, 1 Peter, 1:16
Jesus called us all to go the extra mile. (Matthew 5:41) This is normal Christianity.
Within Israel, there were people called Nazirites (Numbers 6) who took a vow to not cut their hair, not drink alcohol, not eat grapes, and not even go near a dead body. Some examples of Nazirites are Samson and Samuel.
The extra mile for some of us is a similar level of consecration.
Giving up some temporal desires can be difficult, but having an eternal perspective makes it easier. Romans 8:18
I urge you to consider this kind of lifestyle:
- do extended fasts (not eating, and only drinking water for more than 3 days for example)
- Isaiah 58:7
- share your bread with the hungry
- bring the homeless poor into your house
- cover the naked
- give up meat and sweets for a few weeks, like Daniel did Daniel 10:2-3
- abstain from alcohol for a while, or maybe even for life
- serve in the community
- James 1:27
- to visit orphans and widows in their affliction
- keep oneself unstained from the world
- cancel your Netflix account — stop living your life in front of screens!
1 Timothy 6:6
But godliness with contentment is great gain,
Biblical Examples of a Few Expressions of Zeal
Usually, when people are zealous, they are met with opposition.
David - Joy
2 Samuel 6:12-23
When David went and brought up the ark of God, he celebrated and praised God and danced so zealously that his clothes started falling off, and Michal said "How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants' female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!"
Bartimaeus - Desperation
Matthew 20:29-34, Mark 10:46-52, Luke 18:35-43
The blind beggar cried out "Son of David, have mercy on me!", and many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.
Jesus - Anger
Matthew 21:12-17, Mark 11:15-19, Luke 19:45-48, John 2:13-21
When Jesus cleansed the Temple, He was angry that the money changers were creating a barrier for people to get to God by charging people to buy animals for sacrifices. His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me." The Jews said to him, "What sign do you show us for doing these things?"
Effectiveness in Prayer
We need to follow Biblical examples of crying out to God.
Hebrews 5:7
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Passionate prayer is not always impressive. High-sounding spiritual words or rhetoric may not be a part of this kind of prayer. Someone who doesn't know Christian lingo can still engage in passionate prayer. If people sense that they will be judged in these ways, they may shy away from praying aloud in a corporate meeting.
Having said that...
Effectiveness in Prayer Matthew 6:7-13, James 5:13-20, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22
- Seek His Face Jeremiah 29:12-13, 2 Chronicles 7:14, Matthew 6:33
- Thankfulness Colossians 4:2
- Steadfastness 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Acts 2:42, Romans 12:12, Luke 18:1, Colossians 4:2, 1 Peter 4:7
- Having Faith Matthew 7:7, Mark 11:24, James 5:15, 1 John 5:14
- Fervent prayer (literal crying out to God, with a raised voice) 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18, Psalm 55:16-17, Hebrews 5:7, James 5:16-17
- Humble posture (literal physical body posture, even on your face at times, and heart posture) 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18, Joel 2, James 5:16-17
- In the Spirit Romans 8:26-27, Ephesians 6:18, 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, Jude 20
- with Fasting Joel 2, Mark 9:29
- Supplication Ephesians 6:18
High Praises
We need to follow Biblical examples of praise worship.
God inhabits our praises! (Psalm 22:3)
I don't think we realize the implications — how exciting this really is!
Psalm 149:6
Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands
- Psalm 5:11
- "But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;" (All includes you.)
- "let them ever sing for joy," (Literally sing — out loud — using your vocal chords.)
- Psalm 47:1
- Clap your hands, all peoples! (Literally clap, using your hands.)
- Shout to God with loud songs of joy! (Literally shout — literally at a high volume.)
- Psalm 33:3
- "Sing to him a new song" (Spontaneously sing to God.)
- "Play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts" (God deserves skilled worship.)
- Psalm 150:4
- "Praise Him with tambourine and dance" (Literally dance, by moving your body.)
- "Praise Him with strings and pipe!" (A variety of musical instruments and musical styles are encouraged.)
Our purpose in life is literally just to Glorify God. He actually made us just so we would worship Him.
And it's supposed to be fun!

Holiness
1 Peter 1:16
since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."
Matthew 5:17-20
17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 7:21-23
21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'
23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'
Romans 6
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.
8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.
10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.
11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 11:22
Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.
1 Thessalonians 4:7
For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.
Hebrews 10:38-39
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him."
39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
Hebrews 12:12-17
12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees,
13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.
14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no "root of bitterness" springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;
16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.
17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
James 4:4
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
1 John 2:1-3
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
1 John 2:15-16
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
1 John 3:3-4
3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
1 John 5:16-18
16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that.
17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

Zeal
Nehemiah 8:10
Then he said to them, "Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
Luke 13:24
Strive (agōnizomai) to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
Psalm 69:9
For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
John 2:17
His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."
John 10:10-11
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Romans 12:11
Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
Titus 2:11-15
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,
12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
Hebrews 4:11-16
11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
James 5:13-20
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.
18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back,
20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
